Currently, corneal diseases are one of the leading causes of loss of vision, and affect more than 10 million people around the world. The widely accepted treatment for all these conditions is corneal transplantation of a human donor. The difficulties inherent to corneal transplantation (mainly primary rejection and shortage of organ supply) have led to the interest in the development of artificial corneas that can replace the natural organ. The objective of this study is to in vitro generate a collagen-based corneal stroma with characteristics of physical resistance and transparency similar to the human cornea. Several techniques of three-dimensional synthesis will be used such as 3D printing of various concentrations and types of collagen.
