Bioenergy production by hydrothermal carbonization of biowaste

Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) is a thermochemical treatment that improves the properties of biowaste, producing i) a solid fraction - carbon rich fuel, ii) an aqueous stream (process water) which can be used for energy recovery as biogas by anaerobic digestion  and iii) a gaseous product, mainly CO2.

The proposed work is focused on the optimization of the operating conditions to obtain biogas from anaerobic co-digestion of the biowaste with the process water obtained upon HTC. The biowaste to be considered is the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and pruning waste. Results will be compared with those obtained in the codigestion of OFMSW and pruning waste without pretreatment. The effect of different mixing percentages on bioenergy production will be studied and the microbiological analysis will be performed. The solid fraction from HTC will be also characterized in terms of composition and textural properties and higher heating value.
